While United States President Donald Trump has banned Huawei devices in the US and from them using American services such as Google for quite some time now, Huawei has had to get creative. Huawei can’t use Google’s Android operating system, as well as the Google Play Store, so they’ve created their own OS, Harmony OS, and their own play store, Huawei AppGallery. The Chinese tech company is #2 in the world in mobile phone sales behind Samsung, but that could go down soon if Huawei doesn’t make the necessary improvements on Harmony OS, AppGallery, and other types of software.
Only a few days ago, The US put more restrictions on Huawei, as no American tools can be used to make Huawei products. Huawei does create their own processing chips, Kirin, but many of those chips are made in factories in the US. So it’s clear as day the US wants to take down the company and see them fail for whatever odd reason. Huawei would like to work with Google of course, so they could run Android, but they need to accept the fact that as long as Donald Trump is president, that isn’t happening anytime soon. But the Chinese company can use these petty bans as an opportunity to take over the mobile phone industry and possibly more.
Unlike most phones, Huawei has their own processing chip, OS, app store and more. Their recent phones have been superb, especially their recent P40 Pro that contains a 50MP camera and a 12MP telephoto lens on the back, and a 32MP front camera. Huawei’s phone hardware can match up with anyone’s, so for the next year or 2, they need to just focus on software and optimization. They’re already taking those steps, such as partnering with Snapchat so that the app can better utilize the phone’s camera, something no Android phone has done. The closest thing a non-Apple phone manufacturer has done to help optimize their camera with apps is when Samsung had a “Instagram Mode” option on their phone models last year, something they took off this year’s model of Galaxy’s for whatever reason.
In today’s age, where it seems like social media rules everything, Huawei would change the game if they could get their camera to be fully utilized on apps like Instagram and Snapchat. The reason why Android phone cameras aren’t fully utilized with those type of apps is because there are so many different types of Android phones, and companies like Instagram would have to program their app to work with all of those phones’ cameras. Apple on the other hand has their few iPhone models that come out every year as opposed to the vast brands of phone companies that use Android. It does raise the question though as to why Google couldn’t get their cameras to work better with apps because they own Android and have the best cameras in the Android market if not the entire phone market.
So the best thing for Huawei to do? Just move on from America, and anyone else who has their “security concerns”. Forget working to improve hardware for the next couple of future phones and just focus on software. We’ve seen many companies try to compete with Apple, and even though Samsung does lead the world in sales, Apple can swiftly change that, especially with them making much affordable phones now such as the iPhone SE. Samsung is trying to do their own thing, but they still use the Google Play Store, use Snapdragon processing chips, the camera quality still looks weird now matter how much they improve the hardware, and their AI “Bixby” is terrible compared to Google and Siri. Google was very close to being that Apple conqueror, with their amazing cameras, accessibility with apps, and the great Google AI. But Google went completely left with the Pixel 4 and it was so bad it may have single-handedly ruined their future success, unless they can make a great Pixel 5 phone and it seems like they may have just given up.
Huawei can be the first non-Apple phone to have their cameras and other specs work on Instagram and other apps flawlessly, changing the game forever. If they can get all major apps to work on AppGallery, and make unique househould apps such as their own personal navigation app, they can be that #1 phone manufacturer in the world easily, and the US will no choice but to open their doors unless they just don’t want to make money. No matter how accustomed people may get with one specific phone or any object, we’re always looking for the next big thing, so why not Huawei?
