Along with EarPods not being included with this year’s upcoming model, the iPhone 12 won’t include a charger in the box. Multiple sources including top Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo have confirmed that the phone will likely only come with a Lightning to USB-C cable and you’ll have to buy a wall charger separately.
In theory, there won’t be a need for a wall charger if you have a recent model of the MacBook or iPad Pro because both of those devices have a USB-C port, so you could just charge the phone with that or devices that have that same type of port. It’s reported that Apple will release an optional (essential for many people) 20W USB-C power adapter later this year for the iPhone 12, which will be slightly better than this year’s 18W power adapter. There’s also the 30W USB-C power adapter people can purchase now.
Apple doing something this petty shouldn’t come as a surprise by now. When the company released the 2019 Mac Pro, you had the “option” to buy a stand to hold up the computer for $1000. Then earlier this year they released a $700 wheels kit that consists of four small wheels to help you move your Mac Pro around (I think I’d rather just move it around myslef). As long as people keep on falling for these types of ridiculous selling tactics, Apple will keep on doing it. The fact that the company still uses Lighting cables for their phones instead of pure USB-C to USB-C cables (which are better quality than Lighting cables) like every other modern Apple device, shows you how petty they are.
On the other hand, Apple could be just preparing phone users for the future. Within the next couple of years, if not very soon, not just Apple but other phone manufacturers will produce phones that have no charging port. Soon phones will be completely wireless, and things like charging and using headphones will all be completely wireless. Maybe this is Apple’s way of slowly getting consumers ready for that change.
